RRTC Hosts CME Programme on Maternal and Newborn Health at JNMC, AMU

Aligarh: A two-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on maternal and newborn health was successfully conducted by the Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC) at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

This initiative, part of RRTC’s ongoing healthcare capacity-building efforts over the past seven years, was held under the guidance of Dr. Seema Tandon, Deputy Director, RRTC, IHAT, UP-TSU, Lucknow. The programme aimed to enhance the clinical expertise of Medical Officers (MOs) working at First Referral Units (FRUs) in the districts of Aligarh, Hathras, and Kasganj.

The event was organised under the leadership of Prof. Mohammad Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Co-Principal Investigator of the RRTC, with active participation from the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Community Medicine at JNMC.

Fifteen doctors attended the programme, designed to strengthen their skills in identifying and managing life-threatening maternal complications. The sessions included interactive lectures, case discussions, and practical demonstrations using mannequins.

Key topics covered included hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, anaemia, antepartum haemorrhage, prolonged labour, and shock, led by Prof. Zehra Mohsin, Prof. Nishat Akhtar, Dr. Roshan Perween, and Dr. Syed Kamran Habib. Newborn care was also a major focus, with sessions on essential neonatal practices, resuscitation techniques, and the management of preterm and low birth weight infants, presented by Prof. Uzma Firdaus, Prof. Kamran Afzal, Dr. Ayesha, and Dr. Mohd. Kashif Ali.

The programme also included practical demonstrations of labour management and emergency obstetric interventions such as induction and augmentation of labour, management of multiple pregnancies, breech delivery, shoulder dystocia, assisted vaginal delivery, and caesarean sections. Infection prevention strategies were emphasised, and hands-on demonstrations included the use of MVA syringes, B-Lynch and Hayman’s sutures, and repair of perineal and cervical tears, led by Dr. Bushra Fatima, Dr. Deeba Khanam, Prof. Nasreen Noor, and Dr. Shazia Parveen.

The programme concluded with a post-training assessment, feedback session, and a certificate distribution ceremony. The CME programme was accredited with six credit points by the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council.

The valedictory session featured the distribution of certificates by Prof. Zehra Mohsin, Nodal Officer of the RRTC Project and Chairperson of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, who emphasized the importance of clinical preparedness in maternal care. Prof. Nasreen Noor, Co-Nodal Officer of the RRTC Programme; Dr. Shazia Parveen; Dr. Pallavi Pachauri from UP-TSU, Lucknow; and Dr. Tabassum Rehmat, RRTC Coordinator at JNMC attended the programme.

Prof. Zehra Mohsin concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
