Hyderabad: For the second consecutive Friday, Hyderabad and several districts across Telangana witnessed widespread protests against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025.
Demonstrations erupted in various parts of Hyderabad, its outskirts, and multiple towns across the state following Friday prayers. Protesters, carrying placards and chanting slogans, demanded the repeal of the recently amended Waqf Act.
Once again, the historic Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad became a focal point of dissent, as protestors gathered on the streets after prayers to express their strong opposition to the Act. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers to ensure the protests remained peaceful.
In Hyderabad’s Quthbullapur area, the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, along with local leaders and social organisations, organised a rally. Protesters highlighted the potential negative impact of the amendments on Waqf properties and community rights, calling for their protection.
A separate demonstration was held in Santosh Nagar by SIO Yaqutpura, mobilising youth and local residents. The protest was attended by local Corporator Muzaffar Hussain and concluded with an address by Faisal Khan, State PR Secretary of SIO Telangana. Khan emphasised the implications of the new law and called for continued, united resistance until the Act is repealed.
Protesters throughout the state reiterated their commitment to peaceful, democratic demonstrations, urging the government to revoke the amendments and end divisive politics.
In Siddipet town, the Muslim United Front organised a large-scale protest. The rally was attended by members of religious and social organisations, intellectuals, and students, who condemned the Act as a “black law” that undermines constitutional values and infringes upon the religious and legal rights of Muslims. Speakers stressed that safeguarding Waqf properties is a constitutional responsibility.
The All-Party Joint Action Committee (JAC) has announced a Telangana March to be held on April 26 at Dharna Chowk, Indira Park, in the heart of Hyderabad.
Protests were also held in Khammam, where demonstrators gathered in front of several mosques after Friday prayers to raise slogans demanding the protection of Waqf assets.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad is preparing for a massive public meeting against the Waqf Act on April 19. The event, organised by All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), will take place at Darussalam, the headquarters of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). The meeting will be presided over by AIMPLB President Moulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, and will feature addresses by leaders of various Muslim organisations, including AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi.
In response to the call by All-Party JAC for continued protests, demonstrations were also held in Shamshabad, Lingampally, Malakpet, Musheerabad, Yakutpura, Guttala Begumpet, and other areas in and around Hyderabad.
