Patna: Former MLA of Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), Master Mujahid Alam resigned from party on Saturday, putting an end to long speculation. He had expressed his displeasure over JD(U)’s support and skipped party’s press conference of Muslim leaders called to ‘clarify’ party’s stand on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. He was also the district president of JD(U), which was his third term.
In a press conference, Master Mujahid said he resigned over JD(U)’s support to the contentious Waqf Bill, now an Act.
He said, “We all thought that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was a Vikas Purush and a well-wisher of Muslims, but he ditched us by supporting the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.”
He said he would continue to oppose the controversial Waqf Law. He accused the Union Home Minister Amit Shah of misleading people over Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
Master Mujahid Alam jumped into politics and joined JD(U) after resigning as a teacher in September 2010. He said he worked very hard for the party. He said he aimed to serve the people. He was elected an MLA for two terms from Kochadhaman on JD(U) ticket.
Earlier, many Muslim leaders of JD(U) had also resigned from the party but the resignation of Master Mujahid, who had also fought the parliamentary election from Kishanganj on JD(U) ticket, is being seen as the biggest jolt for Nitish Kumar, particularly in the Seemanchal area.

Though it is not clear what would be the next step of Master Mujahid, there seems to be a chance that Prashant Kishor (PK)’s Jan Suraj Party may be his next political abode. PK had gone to Master Mujahid’s village on the occasion of Eid to greet him. Mujahid says PK was his junior at Patna Science College. Others say Master Mujahid may join AIMIM.
