Mangaluru – The Mangaluru City Police have booked three individuals for allegedly disrupting traffic on National Highway 75 during a protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. The demonstration was organized by the Ulema Coordination Committee Karnataka and held at Shah Garden near Adyar on Saturday, reported the Vartha Bharati.
According to the police, although the protest began peacefully with heavy security, a group of participants later moved onto the highway around 4:30 pm, obstructing vehicular movement, including emergency services.
“Despite repeated warnings, some protestors unlawfully entered the highway and disrupted public movement,” said a senior police official. Authorities tried to disperse the crowd, but certain individuals refused to cooperate and engaged in what police called “unlawful activities.”
Based on preliminary video footage, the police have identified three accused: Jaleel from Krishnapura, Fazal from Valachil, and Mohammed Hanif Noufal. A case has been filed at the Kankanady Town Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning obstruction of public servants, unlawful assembly, and endangering public safety.
Police also mentioned that further individuals may be identified as the investigation progresses and additional footage is reviewed. They assured strict legal action against all involved.
The protest drew participants from across coastal Karnataka and was closely monitored by law enforcement agencies to maintain peace. Volunteers from the organizing committee initially helped in managing the crowd but could not prevent the escalation near the highway.
