Bhatkal Joins Nationwide ‘Lights-Off’ Protest Led by AIMPLB Against Waqf Amendment Act

Bhatkal : Responding to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s (AIMPLB) nationwide call, the coastal town of Bhatkal witnessed strong participation in the “Lights-Off Movement” on Wednesday night. As part of the symbolic protest against the controversial Waqf Amendment Act 2025, residents turned off lights in homes, shops, and establishments from 9:00 to 9:15 PM, reported the Sahil Online.
Local organisation Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem took the lead in mobilising community support, with announcements made across more than 100 mosques throughout the town. Streets and neighborhoods including Sultan Street, Jamia Street, Ghausia Street, Nawayath Colony, Madina Colony, and Jamia Abad Road went dark in a unified stand against what protestors describe as an “unconstitutional” law infringing on religious autonomy.
Many residents observed the moment with silent prayers, seeking divine protection for the community’s religious and constitutional rights.
Tanzeem General Secretary Abdul Raqeeb M.J. Nadvi and Bhatkal Muslim Youth Federation General Secretary Mubasshir Hussain Hallare expressed deep appreciation to the public for their solidarity and reiterated their commitment to peaceful democratic resistance under AIMPLB’s guidance.
The “Lights-Off” protest, aimed at drawing national attention to the perceived threats posed by the Waqf Amendment Act, is part of the broader “Save Waqf” campaign being revived across the country.
