In a deeply disturbing incident underscoring rising communal tensions, a 16-year-old Muslim boy named Rehan was brutally assaulted near the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on April 28, 2025, reported the Observerpost.
According to Rehan’s account, the incident began when he was walking near Dashashwamedh Ghat and his hand accidentally brushed against a woman in a crowded area. The woman reportedly misunderstood the accidental contact as intentional and raised an alarm. Within moments, a group of locals surrounded the teenager, interrogated him about his name and religion, and upon learning he was Muslim, the situation escalated violently.
The mob allegedly dragged Rehan to a nearby temple and subjected him to nearly two hours of relentless torture. Rehan claimed that during the attack, his fingernails were pulled out, his fingers were broken, and he suffered numerous other injuries.
Despite his critical condition, Rehan managed to make it home, after which his family rushed him to the hospital. He is currently undergoing medical treatment, and his condition is being closely monitored.
The local police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and have launched an investigation. Officials have assured the public that those responsible for the brutal assault will be identified and punished in accordance with the law.
This appalling case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns about mob violence and the safety of religious minorities in India. Civil society groups and activists are calling for swift justice and the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent hate-fueled attacks.
