Hyderabad— Thousands gathered in Hyderabad to protest the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which critics argue is unconstitutional and discriminatory towards the Muslim community. Protesters donned black armbands and carried placards demanding the withdrawal of the Act. Slogans such as “We want justice” and “Nahi Nahi chalegi, Tanshahi Nahi chalegi” echoed through the streets. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) had called for nationwide protests, urging Muslims to wear black armbands during prayers as a peaceful demonstration against the legislation .
AIMIM chief and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi joined the protests, criticizing the Act for allowing non-Muslims to be part of Waqf boards, a move he claims undermines the autonomy of Muslim religious institutions . The Telangana Waqf Board also rejected the proposed amendments, stating that the bill threatens the federal structure and contradicts the principles of the Hindu Endowment Act .
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, has sparked nationwide protests, with incidents reported in various states. Critics argue that the Act targets Muslim religious endowments and enables state interference in Waqf properties .
