Hyderabad – In a disturbing case that has raised serious questions about police conduct, a 35-year-old auto driver, Mohammad Irfan, reportedly died after being subjected to alleged third-degree torture by Rajendranagar police on the evening of May 13, reported the Siasat.
Irfan, a resident of Gandipet, was brought to the Rajendranagar police station by his in-laws amid ongoing marital discord with his wife, Nahida, to seek police counselling around 7:30 PM. However, what followed turned into a tragedy that has shaken the local community.
According to Irfan’s younger brother, Mohammad Sadiq, after a counselling session, police officers took Irfan into a room and assaulted him with rubber belts. “We were standing outside when we heard his screams. We tried to go in, but a constable stopped us and turned us away,” Sadiq said.
An hour later, Irfan emerged from the building, vomiting and visibly in distress. He collapsed on the steps outside the station. A police officer reportedly assured the family that Irfan was fine. Not convinced, the family rushed him to a private hospital and later to Osmania Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The family has accused the Rajendranagar police of custodial violence and demanded a full inquiry. “How can the police beat someone over a matrimonial issue? We want justice. Let the CCTV footage from the station be examined and strict action taken against the responsible officers,” said Sadiq.
While Irfan’s family filed a complaint, the police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), citing a suspicious death. They also took a statement from Irfan’s wife, alleging that he was involved in an extramarital affair.
The Rajendranagar police have so far declined to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, activists and citizens have demanded transparency and accountability in the investigation.
