Pneumonia Outbreak Affects 99 Indonesian Haj Pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, One Fatality Reported

Jakarta/Mecca – A pneumonia outbreak has struck 99 Indonesian Haj pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, with one fatality confirmed, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The Ministry has issued an urgent warning about the rise in cases, stressing the need for immediate medical attention to prevent further complications.
Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, head of the Haj Health Centre, said on Thursday, “The increase in pneumonia among our Haj pilgrims requires serious and swift intervention, as it can escalate rapidly if not managed properly.”
The affected pilgrims are currently receiving intensive care in hospitals across Mecca and Medina, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. The Ministry attributes the surge in pneumonia cases to extreme temperatures reaching 47°C, physical exhaustion due to tight schedules, overcrowding, and existing health conditions.
To mitigate further spread, Liliek advised pilgrims to wear masks, maintain hand hygiene, stay hydrated, adhere to their prescribed medications, and avoid smoking. She emphasized the importance of reporting any symptoms immediately to ensure early treatment.
According to the Indonesian Haj Health Clinics (KKHI), the infected pilgrims are spread across various sectors and groups. The Health Ministry continues to closely monitor the evolving situation as pilgrims carry out their religious rites.
Liliek also highlighted the danger pneumonia poses to those with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. She noted that dehydration, worsened by the searing heat, further weakens the immune system, increasing susceptibility to respiratory infections.
Pneumonia, an infection that inflames the air sacs in the lungs, can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi and is particularly dangerous in high-density gatherings like Haj.
The Ministry has urged all pilgrims to take preventive measures seriously and ensure their health remains a priority during the pilgrimage.
