New Delhi: A Delhi court has acquitted 30 Hindu men accused in four separate cases related to the killing of Muslims during the 2020 Delhi riots, citing insufficient evidence, reported the Madhyamam.
The court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the involvement of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. The accused were charged with murder, rioting, and unlawful assembly under multiple FIRs registered in northeast Delhi during the communal violence that claimed over 50 lives, predominantly Muslims.
According to the court order, the testimonies presented by the prosecution lacked consistency and failed to establish the accused’s identity during the riots. The court noted discrepancies in eyewitness accounts and criticized the investigative lapses.
The communal violence erupted in February 2020 amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), leading to widespread clashes between supporters and opponents of the law. Rights groups and community leaders have repeatedly criticized the perceived bias in the investigation and prosecution of riot cases.
