Canadian PM Mark Carney Trolled for Calling Muslim Values “Canadian Values” in Eid Message

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney came under heavy criticism on social media after delivering an Eid al-Adha message where he equated Muslim values with Canadian values. Speaking at an event hosted by the Muslim Association of Canada, Carney emphasized that the message of Eid — rooted in community, generosity, and sacrifice — should resonate with all Canadians, reported the Times of India.
“The lessons and values of Eid are the same. Our Canada is a diverse country, proud home to different beliefs, different languages and different cultures… We can pray differently but all of us must come together around the values of Eid,” he said.
He went on to state, “The values of community, of generosity, and yes, of sacrifice — these are Muslim values, these are Canadian values.”
While his comments were well-received at the event, they quickly drew criticism online. A video clip of the speech went viral on X ,  with one user posting, “Is Canada done for?” Others accused Carney of trying to “Islamize” Canada, questioning why he didn’t make similar references to Christianity during Easter.
Indian-origin journalist Rupa Subramanya also joined the criticism, tweeting: “Islamic values are not Canadian values. And there ain’t nothing bigoted in saying that.”
Several right-wing users went further, calling Islam derogatory names and insisting that Canada was founded on Christian and Western European values — not those of Islam, Hinduism, or any other “pagan” faith, as one post put it.
Some users expressed concern over what they perceived as a normalization of Islamic culture in Canada’s public sphere, while others condemned the xenophobic backlash, calling it an example of growing religious intolerance.
Despite the online trolling, Carney’s office has not issued a formal response. The incident has once again spotlighted the tension between multiculturalism and rising right-wing narratives in Canada.
