US Denies Intent for War, Says Strikes on Iran Meant to Neutralize Nuclear Threat

Washington: The United States has asserted that it does not seek war with Iran, following its surprise airstrikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities in a mission named “Operation Midnight Hammer.” The operation was launched early Sunday and involved stealth bombers, decoys, and deception tactics, reportedly meeting no resistance from Iran, reported the NBC News.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking at a Pentagon press briefing alongside Gen Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized that the mission was strictly to “neutralize the threats to our national interests” and not aimed at regime change. He confirmed that the targets included key nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
“This was a precision and intentionally limited strike,” Hegseth said, adding that the operation involved high-level security and misdirection. “Our B-2 bombers went in and out without the world knowing,” he added.
The Defence Secretary also said that the US is communicating with Iran through various channels to encourage dialogue. “We are giving them every opportunity to come to the table,” he stated.
US Vice President JD Vance echoed similar sentiments, stating, “We do not want this to escalate further. Our goal is to dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme and engage in talks for a long-term settlement.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that the next steps depend on Tehran’s response. “If the regime wants peace, we’re ready for peace. If they choose aggression, they are highly vulnerable. They can’t even protect their own airspace,” Rubio said during an appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation. He warned against any retaliatory actions by Iran on countries hosting US military bases.
Rubio also justified the presence of US bases in the region, claiming they exist because “those countries are afraid of Iranian aggression.”
The strikes have further heightened tensions in the already volatile Middle East, with observers watching closely for Iran’s next move.
