Union Government’s Waqf Umeed Portal for Compulsory Registration is Illegal and Contempt of Court, Alleges Jawahirullah

Chennai– Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah has strongly opposed the Union government’s launch of the Waqf Umeed Portal, stating that making the registration of Waqf properties compulsory through the portal is illegal and in contempt of court, reported the Hindu.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Mr. Jawahirullah pointed out that the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, which forms the basis for the portal, is currently under judicial review by the Supreme Court of India. “This Act has faced stiff resistance not only from Muslim organisations but also from various political parties that stand for social harmony,” he said.
He emphasized that launching the Waqf Umeed Portal on June 6 and mandating compulsory registration of Waqf properties through it, while the Act’s constitutional validity is under challenge, undermines the judicial process. “This is not only unlawful but also amounts to contempt of court,” Mr. Jawahirullah asserted.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has also advised Waqf administrators and State Waqf Boards to hold off on using the portal for registrations until the Supreme Court delivers its final verdict. The Board has contended that the Waqf Amendment Act itself violates constitutional provisions and therefore should not be implemented prematurely.
