Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh – In a major relief for the families affected by the aftermath of communal violence, the Allahabad High Court has granted bail to 20 individuals who were arrested in connection with last year’s clashes near the historic Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, reported the Clarion India.
The violence had erupted during a controversial second survey of the mosque premises, following which Uttar Pradesh Police launched a large-scale crackdown, arresting 96 people. Among those arrested was well-known lawyer Zafar Ali. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the matter filed 12 FIRs and submitted charge sheets in each case, naming 21 individuals in a 1,200-page charge sheet.
Prominent among the accused are Samajwadi Party MP Zia ur Rahman Barq and local activist Shariq Patha, both alleged to have incited the crowd and mobilized youth during the unrest.
Since the incident, tensions in Sambhal have remained high, with local residents and activists accusing the police of unfairly targeting Muslim youth. Many allege that even peaceful religious expressions, such as offering prayers on one’s own terrace, have led to arrests under the pretext of maintaining public order. On Holi, Friday prayers were reportedly delayed, citing law and order concerns.
Speeches by BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have also come under scrutiny for their communal undertones, which many believe have contributed to an atmosphere of fear and surveillance in the area.
Despite these challenges, the recent bail verdict by the High Court has come as a moment of relief for the families of those incarcerated. After spending over a year behind bars, the release of 20 individuals has brought some measure of justice and hope. The families have expressed heartfelt gratitude to the judiciary for upholding their rights and granting them a chance to rebuild their lives.
Meanwhile, several other accused, including MP Zia ur Rahman Barq, remain in jail as the legal process continues.
