New York : In a surprising turn in American politics, tech billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party — the America Party. The move signals a clear break from his previous political alliances, including his support for former US President Donald Trump, reported the Free Press Journal.
Musk made the announcement on July 4 via a post on his social media platform X, stating that the United States is no longer functioning as a democracy, but rather as a “one-party system in disguise.” He criticised both major parties — Democrats and Republicans — for contributing to what he termed “bipartisan waste and corruption.”
“America is being bankrupted by bipartisan waste and corruption. This is not democracy — it’s a one-party system in disguise,” Musk wrote. “The America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
This new political move follows a public fallout between Musk and Trump. Once close allies, their relationship soured during Musk’s brief tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where his push for severe spending cuts clashed with Trump’s expansive fiscal policies.
Musk has since become an outspoken critic of Trump’s economic agenda, particularly condemning a recent large-scale spending bill, warning that it could significantly increase the national debt. Following the passage of the bill, Musk vowed to oppose any lawmaker — regardless of party — who supported the measure.
To gauge public opinion, Musk conducted a poll on July 4 asking Americans if they desired “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” According to Musk, the results showed a 2-to-1 margin in favour of a new political movement.
“By overwhelming demand, you want a new party. Now, you have it,” Musk declared in his post.
The creation of the America Party marks a significant political shift, with Musk positioning himself not only as a tech innovator but now as a political reformist aiming to shake up the traditional US political structure.
