Hamas Agrees to Release 10 Israeli Captives Amid Ongoing Ceasefire Talks, Demands End to Gaza Genocide

In a crucial gesture aimed at advancing ceasefire efforts, Hamas has agreed to release 10 Israeli captives as part of ongoing negotiations to bring an end to the relentless Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip. Despite its willingness to cooperate for peace, the group emphasized that the talks remain difficult due to Israel’s “intransigence” and continued aggression, Al Jazeera reported.
The announcement came on Wednesday, a day marked by intense bombardment that claimed the lives of at least 74 Palestinians, highlighting the urgent need for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope that a truce might be reached soon, though no concrete steps have yet materialized from the Israeli side.
Mediated by Qatar and the United States, the talks have stalled over key humanitarian demands. Hamas insists on the free flow of life-saving aid into Gaza, a complete and verifiable withdrawal of Israeli forces, and firm guarantees for a permanent ceasefire — demands rooted in basic human rights and international law.
Hamas spokesperson Taher al-Nunu confirmed the group’s acceptance of the latest proposal, stressing that Hamas had shown maximum flexibility to safeguard its people. “We offered the necessary flexibility to protect our people, stop the crime of genocide, and allow the free and dignified flow of aid until a complete end to the war is achieved,” he told Al Jazeera.
He further noted that the withdrawal of Israeli troops must be structured in a way that ensures the safety and dignity of Palestinians and sets the stage for the next phase of negotiations focused on long-term stability and justice.
As the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza deepens, Hamas continues to assert its commitment to defending Palestinian lives while engaging with efforts to halt the war. The group’s decision to release captives underscores its willingness to pursue peace — provided it is rooted in justice, dignity, and sovereignty.
