The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has sharply condemned threats made by CPI(M) workers during a protest rally in Wandoor, Kerala, which included a chilling call to “cut off the hands” of MediaOne TV’s Managing Editor, C Dawood, reported the Maktoob Media.
The incident occurred on Thursday during a demonstration organised by the CPI(M) Vandur Area Committee. Protesters hurled abusive and threatening slogans at Dawood, accusing him of maligning the party. Among those present was Vandur Area Secretary B.M. Razaq, who, along with other protesters, issued a direct threat, warning, “If you do so again, we will cut off your hands.”
The KUWJ strongly criticised the statements, labelling them “highly objectionable” and a dangerous assault on press freedom. In a statement, the union said, “For a political party that claims to uphold civil rights and freedom of the press, such open threats against a journalist are unacceptable and shameful.”
The journalist body further pointed out that criticism or disagreements with the media should be addressed through legal and democratic channels, not through threats or violence. “Calling for violent protests against MediaOne employees is a serious concern that endangers those working there,” the union stated.
KUWJ President K.P. Reji and General Secretary Suresh Edappal called for immediate police action against those who raised such provocative slogans. They urged the CPI(M) leadership to take accountability and curb such extreme rhetoric among its ranks.
C Dawood, who is also a respected writer and host of the TV program Out of Focus, is widely known for his critical analysis on political, social, and religious issues. In recent episodes, he has alleged growing Islamophobia within CPI(M), accusing the party of targeting Muslim organisations and media platforms like MediaOne for their dissenting views.
The escalating tension between CPI(M) and the Malayalam news channel has raised concerns over freedom of expression and journalist safety in Kerala.
