Dhubri, Assam : A massive protest was staged on Thursday by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in Assam’s Dhubri district, following a large-scale eviction drive earlier this week that turned violent. The eviction, carried out on Tuesday in the Chapor revenue circle of Bilasipara, reportedly displaced around 1,100 families and cleared nearly 3,500 bighas (approximately 1,160 acres) of land, reported the Nagaland Post.
Senior AIUDF leaders, including MLAs Aminul Islam and Karim Uddin Barbhuyan, led the protest rally alongside scores of affected residents. Demonstrators condemned the eviction as unjust and inhumane, accusing the BJP-led government of forcefully uprooting thousands without proper rehabilitation.
Speaking to reporters, Aminul Islam said, “The eviction drive was carried out in a brutal manner. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless. Such an injustice cannot be tolerated. The AIUDF will continue to fight for the rights of the victims.”
The evicted land, located in the villages of Charuwa Bakra, Chirakuta, and Santoshpur under Chapar circle, is reportedly being handed over to the Adani Group for setting up a proposed 3,400 MW thermal power plant. According to police sources, the eviction turned tense when some protestors allegedly damaged excavators and attempted to attack security personnel, prompting the police to resort to baton-charge to disperse the crowd.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had visited the site last month and announced plans for the power project. He stated that a tender for the plant will be floated soon.
The protest reflects growing tensions between developmental ambitions and the displacement of marginalized communities, as opposition parties demand accountability and fair rehabilitation.
