Maharashtra Govt to Rename Islampur to “Ishwarpur”

Mumbai — In a significant move, the Maharashtra government has decided to rename Islampur, a city in Sangli district, as Ishwarpur. Announced by Food & Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal during a post-cabinet press briefing, the decision will now be forwarded to the Central government for approval , reported the Madhyamam.
The change follows persistent demands from local residents and pressure from the Hindutva organization, Shiv Pratisthan, led by Sambhaji Bhide, who submitted a memorandum to the Sangli collectorate and vowed not to relent until the request was honored . A Shiv Sena leader revealed that the proposal dates back to 1986 .
This renaming continues Maharashtra’s recent trend in rebranding cities along cultural lines—following Aurangabad’s change to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad’s to Dharashiv in 2022—each approved by the central government .
However, the move has also generated criticism. Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh questioned the government’s priorities, pointing to inadequate civic infrastructure in Islampur—such as water supply, roads, and public spaces—as more pressing issues than the renaming itself .
