New Delhi – The Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament officially began today, running until August 21 with 21 sittings slated over 32 days, reported the Hindustan Times . It marks the first meeting since Operation Sindoor, launched in May following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives .
In a pre-session all-party meeting on July 20, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the government’s readiness to press ahead with its legislative agenda and engage in discussions on national security matters like Operation Sindoor . The agenda includes 17 bills — seven pending and eight new proposals — covering a wide range of sectors, from taxation to sports and heritage conservation .
Key scheduled legislations include:
Income-Tax Bill, 2025 (pending since the Budget Session)
Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill, 2025
Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill
National Sports Governance Bill, among others .
The Opposition INDIA bloc, spearheaded by Congress, is expected to raise pointed questions on topics such as Operation Sindoor, the Pahalgam attack, the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and the recent Air India crash . They will also press for clarity on US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan .
Speaker Om Birla has urged all Members of Parliament to debate constructively and uphold decorum in “the sacred temple of democracy” .
Outlook: With a packed agenda that includes major reform bills and heated discussions on national security and electoral integrity, this Monsoon Session is shaping up to be one of the most consequential assemblies of the 18th Lok Sabha.
