CPM Affirms Commitment to Minority Rights and Secularism

Thiruvananthapuram : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] state secretariat has strongly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting minority rights and preserving secularism, while distancing itself from controversial remarks made by SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan targeting the Muslim community.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the CPM emphasized that while individuals are free to raise issues concerning their communities, such expressions must not incite religious hatred or disturb communal harmony.
The party reminded that the SNDP—founded by revered social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, who championed the unity of religions—should uphold secular values and contribute to social peace and cohesion.
Highlighting the essential role of minority protection in a functioning democracy, the CPM stated, “Safeguarding the rights of minorities is fundamental to preserving secularism. A society where all faiths and non-believers coexist peacefully can only thrive in a truly secular atmosphere.”
The CPM also underscored the Kerala government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of all communities through inclusive welfare missions and poverty alleviation schemes that cater to the economically disadvantaged, regardless of religion or caste.
Reflecting on Kerala’s history of progressive social movements, the party declared that it continues the legacy of the state’s renaissance leaders by championing social justice and working for the upliftment of marginalized groups.
Furthermore, the party warned that communalizing society aligns with the interests of corporate forces and that such trends must be firmly resisted. “The secular fabric of the state must be defended against all forms of communalism,” the statement concluded.
