Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi raised strong objections in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over the eviction of the historic Eidgah in Jalandhar Cantonment, reported the Dainik Bhaskar.
He stated that the 1.78-acre land has been used by Muslims for prayers since 1909 and is officially Waqf property. This was confirmed by a central government notification dated December 2, 1995.
Channi told the House that the Jalandhar Cantonment Board sent a notice on July 17, asking the Eidgah to be vacated within 10 days. He pointed out that the matter is still under court consideration.
He said the notice violates Supreme Court orders and misuses the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971.
Calling the action illegal and discriminatory, Channi demanded an immediate stop to the eviction.
He urged the Defence Minister to protect court orders and the rights of the Muslim community.
Channi also mentioned the suspension of property registrations in the cantonment area. He said this has impacted the public severely.
As a solution, he suggested building a peripheral road for 13 villages within the cantonment. This would ensure both civilian access and military security.
He appealed to the Centre to act quickly to avoid unrest and injustice.
