Madrasa Demolished in Assam’s Jorhat After Nationalist Group’s Encroachment Allegations

Jorhat, Assam  — The Jorhat district administration on Tuesday demolished a madrasa and the boundary wall of a nearby mosque after the Assamese nationalist group Bir Lachit Sena alleged that the structures were built illegally on public land, reported the Maktoob Media.
The demolition, carried out under heavy police deployment to prevent law-and-order disturbances, has drawn sharp reactions from the local Muslim community. Residents say the madrasa had served as an important educational centre for local children and accuse the authorities of attempting to erase a part of their identity.
The Bir Lachit Sena, a regional outfit known for its hardline anti-immigration stance, hailed the move as a “victory for indigenous rights” and vowed to push for similar actions in other districts of Assam.
Officials, however, have not yet presented official land records confirming the alleged encroachment. A senior district official described the demolition as part of a “routine drive” to remove unauthorised constructions.
Community leaders and rights activists warn that such actions risk escalating communal tensions and further entrenching anti-Muslim bias in the state.
