Jamia Announces Sharp Fee Hike, AMU Protests Lead to Partial Rollback

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia’s (JMI) 2025–26 prospectus shows a steep rise in fees across many programs. The hikes have raised concerns over affordability and access, especially for minority and economically weaker students.
The B.A. (Hons.) Social Work program shows the highest jump of 147.47%. Fees rose from ₹7,425 to ₹18,375. Environmental Science fees went up by 95%. Education fees increased by 88%.
Overall, nearly 70% of JMI’s 220 programs show a hike of at least 10%. The university has not issued any statement on the decision. Observers see the move as part of financial restructuring. Critics warn it could weaken JMI’s role as a center of affordable and inclusive education.
At Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), fees were raised by 36–42%. The move triggered protests from August 5. Students staged sit-ins at Bab-e-Syed gate and boycotted classes.
In response, the AMU Academic Council held a special meeting on August 14. It capped the hike for continuing students at 20%. The increase will be applied in phases.
AMU also introduced installment payment options and concessions for weaker students. The university promised to explore alumni contributions and research funding to reduce pressure on students.
According to UGC data, tuition fees in public universities have risen by 20–30% in the past decade. The developments at JMI and AMU reflect this national trend. They also highlight questions of accessibility for marginalized and minority communities who rely on central universities for affordable education.
