Rewa, Madhya Pradesh: Days after a shrine was vandalized in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur, a fresh incident of desecration has been reported from Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, causing anger and unease in the local Muslim community.
According to police, miscreants targeted the centuries-old Ghazi Miyan dargah in Gurgi village, under Gurh police station limits, late on Friday night. The attackers allegedly damaged the shrine’s dome, minaret, entrance, and the inner sanctum, before hoisting a religious flag on the premises. Authorities described the act as a deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony in the area.
News of the vandalism spread quickly on Saturday, triggering outrage and protests among local Muslims. A large number of people gathered near the shrine, demanding immediate action against the culprits. Police and district officials rushed to the spot, assuring the community that strict measures would be taken.
On the basis of a complaint filed by the dargah’s caretaker, police registered a case against unidentified persons. Swift investigations led to the arrest of four accused, one of whom is a resident of the same village. Officials claimed the perpetrators were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.
While the arrests have somewhat eased tensions, authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further escalation. Community leaders have called for stronger action to deter such acts of sacrilege in the future.
