AMU Students Booked for Pro-Palestine Slogans Amid Fee Hike Protest

Aligarh: Ten students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been named in a police case for reportedly chanting pro-Palestinian slogans during a protest against the university’s fee hike and demanding the restoration of the Students’ Union. The demonstration, which lasted nearly three weeks, included daily marches across the campus.

A complaint filed by the local Hindu Raksha Dal district president cited video clips showing students, carrying a Palestinian flag and raising slogans in solidarity with Palestine. The allegations, which claim such expressions threaten peace and harmony, led to a First Information Report being filed at the Civil Lines police station under sections 223 (disobedience to public servant orders) and 353(2) (public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The protest was primarily focused against escalating fees but also pushed for reinstating union representation on campus. This incident underscores growing tensions between student activism and administrative or political sensitivities. While students argue their slogans reflect a humane expression of solidarity, critics claim they disturb communal peace. The campus now awaits institutional and legal developments as the case progresses.
