Hyderabad: A right-wing group held a two-hour sit-in protest outside Madrasa Nomania in Balapur, Hyderabad, demanding its immediate closure. The madrasa operates within a 400-year-old Qutb Shahi-era mosque — Masjid-e-Hussaini — located under the Balapur police jurisdiction. Members of the protesting group allegedly sought to disrupt communal harmony by targeting the institution that has functioned peacefully for the past seven years.
Amjedullah Khan, a spokesperson for the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), described the sit-in as a deliberate move by Hindutva elements to provoke tensions. He emphasized that the madrasa, serving the community’s educational and spiritual needs, has coexisted harmoniously alongside regular prayers at the mosque. The protesters’ actions have raised alarm among local residents and community leaders, who viewed it as a provocation rather than a legitimate grievance.
The police monitored the situation closely, ensuring that no escalation occurred during the protest. Despite the pressure, the madrasa’s caretaker and supporters have affirmed their commitment to continue operating within the mosque premises. Social media posts and community forums have condemned the protest, urging authorities to protect the rights of minority institutions and uphold secular coexistence.
This incident highlights rising challenges faced by educational and religious minority spaces in the region. While the authorities have maintained peace for now, community advocates argue that safeguarding such institutions requires sustained dialogues, legal protections, and public awareness to deter future provocations.
