Greater Israel: An Old and New Dream

Israel, without any prejudice, is an occupying and tyrannical entity. Since the date of its emergence as a result of implementation of the Balfour Declaration, it has been committing crimes and massacres, violating international law, and trampling upon all moral and human values. Indeed, it is an entity obsessed with liquidating the Palestinian people so that it may enjoy all the Palestinian lands and even more than that.

Such is Israel. But this entity, which has struck the conscience of the world to death, is the very same one which – with deep regret – we see clinging to its illusion and its alleged dream of establishing a “Greater Israel.” We see its attachment to a historical lie, while on our part, despite possessing the historical right, we have done everything that leads to squandering it. Thus, we understand how even lies and illusions live longer when they find those who hold onto them.

This is the quick commentary that seemed to us suitable in response to the statement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he reveals his dream of establishing a “Greater Israel,” at the very moment when hunger is tearing at the intestines of the people of Gaza, and the images of children who have become skeletons due to hunger and malnutrition overwhelm us.

Let us remember well that the situation in Gaza is extremely tragic from a humanitarian perspective, and from the excess of tragedy and global embarrassment we have seen how some countries threatened to recognise Palestine, while others actually recognised it. This is something that would not have been easy were it not for the deadly starvation that Israel practices against the people of Gaza and their children, leaving no room for political manoeuvring or silence.

Netanyahu is engaged in the rhetoric of revealing his historical and spiritual dream, launching the phrase “Greater Israel” as a method intended to distract the world from the AI-generated images circulating about him, showing him swimming in the blood of Palestinians. All this to divert public opinion to another subject.

Indeed, there is nothing new in this rhetoric, which turned away the necks that had been looking at the hungry, and at Israel’s obstinacy in preventing international humanitarian aid from reaching the people of Gaza. For “Greater Israel” is the “Promised Land” adopted by Israeli historical rhetoric. Both are one in the dream, in the lie, in the borders, in the map, in the geography, and in the illusion. Only, politically, the phrase “Greater Israel” is more suitable than “Promised Land,” with its spiritual, historical, and linguistic reference, according to Israeli claims. Moreover, the phrase “Greater Israel” had already been used in 1967. Despite all the pressures from several countries in the world, Israel appears in a comfortable political position.

At a time when Lebanon is trying to strengthen its state institutions and monopolise weapons, the project of “Greater Israel” is being inflated to create turmoil and weaken all the parties working to address the tension in the region. It is a type of escalation and provocation so that these parties may be dragged into battles related to the project of “Greater Israel” this time. Did the Arab states which believed in negotiation and the forced acceptance of Israel make a mistake? Didn’t Egypt, under Sadat, sign a peace treaty and pay heavy prices for that? The current situation is problematic, as though it is dragging along the mistakes of the beginnings of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
