Meerut: Meerut Police on Monday arrested four individuals, including an All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) councillor, for allegedly burning posters of the controversial film Udaipur Files and raising objectionable slogans, reported the Siasat.
The arrested include Fazal Karim (40), councillor of Ward 71 in the Islamabad area of Meerut, along with Anees (42), Shahid (28), and Qasim (58). According to police, a complaint was lodged at Lisadi Gate police station alleging that the group “insulted” the image of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal printed on the posters, set them on fire, and shouted anti-national slogans.
Station House Officer (SHO) Ashok Kumar confirmed that police acted after receiving the complaint from local residents. “We formed a team to investigate the matter and, with the help of video footage, identified the accused involved in burning posters and raising objectionable slogans,” he said. The four were subsequently arrested and booked under relevant legal provisions.
Udaipur Files is based on the killing of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was murdered in June 2022 by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The incident had sparked widespread outrage and remains a sensitive communal issue. The film’s release has been marked by criticism and controversy, particularly over its portrayal of religious tensions.
The arrests in Meerut have once again underscored the divisive impact of the film, which continues to provoke strong reactions across the country. Police said further investigation is underway, and more arrests may follow if additional involvement is found.
