Patna: Educator and YouTuber Khan Sir has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the 18 percent Goods and Services Tax on educational services. Speaking after the recent rationalisation of GST rates, Khan Sir said quality education should not be taxed. He stressed that learning must remain accessible and free from commercialisation.
He welcomed the decision to impose a 40 percent tax on luxury goods, including high-end vehicles, yachts, helicopters, tobacco, and sugary beverages. He described the move as a positive step and expressed hope that the Prime Minister would announce further relief on education in future addresses.
The remarks came after the 56th GST Council meeting decided to streamline tax slabs by merging the 12 percent and 28 percent categories into two slabs of 5 percent and 18 percent. Alongside, the council introduced the 40 percent category for luxury and sin goods.
On Teachers’ Day, Khan Sir also paid tribute to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s former President and one of its most respected scholars. He underlined the importance of preserving the teacher-student relationship as a sacred tradition. He pledged to carry forward the idea that education is not limited to securing employment, but is a means for holistic growth.
Teachers’ Day is observed across India on September 5 to mark Dr Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary. He served as India’s first Vice President and later as the second President of the country.
