Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has declared its support for Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, the INDIA bloc nominee for Vice President. Party president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi made the announcement on Saturday through a statement on X.
Owaisi described Reddy as a “fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist.” He said the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office had approached AIMIM to seek the party’s backing. He also confirmed that he personally spoke with Reddy and conveyed his best wishes.
Justice Sudarshan Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge, was announced as the united Opposition’s candidate on August 19. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called the election an “ideological battle” and described Reddy as “pro-poor” and a “champion of economic and social causes.”
Reddy’s legal career includes practice in Andhra Pradesh, appointment as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and elevation to the Supreme Court in 2007. He retired in 2011 after serving four years on the apex court bench.
The election for Vice President is scheduled for September 9. Reddy will contest against NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan. With AIMIM’s endorsement, Reddy’s support base has widened beyond the INDIA bloc, adding weight to his campaign in the run-up to the polls.
