Assam: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) organized a large protest in Mirza, Kamrup district, against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Hundreds of supporters joined the demonstration, raising slogans and carrying banners calling for the withdrawal of the law.
The event began with tributes to cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Party members lit candles before his portrait and took an oath to continue opposing the CAA. Leaders described the Act as a direct threat to Assam’s cultural and ethnic identity.
Addressing the gathering, AJP joint secretary Pankaj Lochan Goswami accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the CAA to grant citizenship selectively for political gains. He questioned why the law is rejected in other northeastern states but imposed on Assam. Goswami said the extension of the Act’s application deadline by ten more years is proof of its political intent.
Speakers emphasized that the legislation discriminates against the indigenous population and undermines the democratic principles of equal treatment. They declared that the people of Assam would not accept it under any circumstances.
The protest in Mirza highlights the continuing opposition to the CAA in Assam. With growing participation from youth and civil society groups, AJP leaders said the movement will intensify until the law is repealed.
