Syed Kirmani Urges Separation of Politics and Cricket Amid India-Pakistan Debate

Kochi: Former Indian wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani has called for a clear separation between politics and sports, amid renewed tensions surrounding cricket ties between India and Pakistan. Speaking at the inauguration of the 75th edition of the Pooja Cricket Tournament in Tripunithura, the 1983 World Cup winner underlined the role of cricket as a unifying force.

“Politics is global, and it will always be there. But sports brings harmony and unity,” Kirmani said, choosing not to comment directly on whether India should continue to face Pakistan in tournaments. His remarks came after the India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash in Dubai, where the absence of a customary handshake between captains Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha highlighted the strained political backdrop.

Kirmani, 75, known for his steady approach on and off the field, reminded critics not to drag cricket into the political crossfire. “Comments from outside will always come, but players are there to play,” he noted, stressing that athletes must be allowed to focus on their game.

The veteran of 88 Test matches also spoke about middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the Asia Cup squad. Expressing sympathy, he recalled his own career setback in 1986 when he was dropped despite being in form. “Iyer is unlucky to miss out. He’s a talented player who deserves a place,” he said.

Kirmani’s balanced views echo the long-held perspective of former cricketers who see sport as a bridge in difficult times, rather than a platform for political disputes.
