CPI(M) Warns of Rising Authoritarianism, Harassment of Minorities, and Democratic Erosion

New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has sounded a sharp warning against what it describes as a deepening crisis of democracy and secularism under the BJP-led Union government. The party flagged repression in Jammu and Kashmir, harassment of Bengali-speaking Muslims, attacks on marginalised communities, and growing corporate dominance over the economy.

Briefing the media after its Central Committee meeting in the capital, senior leader M A Baby said the government was combining authoritarian governance, communal polarisation, and pro-corporate policies in a way that threatened the republic.

On Jammu and Kashmir, the CPI(M) said democratic rights had been trampled since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. It demanded immediate restoration of statehood and warned of rising discontent under central rule. The party also highlighted curbs on media and civic freedoms in the region.

The communique raised alarm over the treatment of Bengali-speaking Muslims, accusing police and local administrations of branding citizens as “Bangladeshis” under “Operation Sindoor”. The CPI(M) alleged that Indian citizens were being detained, harassed, or pushed across the border. It pledged to stand by those facing what it called communal targeting.

The party linked these actions to a broader pattern of polarisation, citing eviction drives in Assam and campaigns aimed at disenfranchising citizens. It also criticised attempts to link Aadhaar with voter rolls, warning of mass exclusion.

On the economy, the CPI(M) said government concessions to corporations had worsened inequality and unemployment while small farmers and workers suffered. It criticised the Draft National Telecom Policy 2025, tax breaks worth ₹1.5 lakh crore to corporations, and India’s vulnerability to U.S. tariff pressure.

The statement condemned rising violence against women, Dalits, and Adivasis, along with communal rhetoric from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. It accused the Assam government of exploiting land evictions for communal mobilisation and resource extraction.

On foreign policy, the party denounced Israel’s attacks in Gaza and the West Bank and announced a nationwide Palestine solidarity campaign. It also welcomed growing opposition unity, citing recent joint protests and the Vice-Presidential election contest.

The CPI(M) announced plans for mass campaigns against economic inequality, communal persecution, and U.S. trade pressure, urging citizens to defend secularism, federalism, and democratic rights.
