Guwahati: Opposition parties in Assam have announced plans to file a police complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over an artificial intelligence-generated video that suggested a “Muslim takeover” of the state if the BJP is not in power. The video, shared on the official handle of Assam BJP, has sparked strong criticism across political lines.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi accused the BJP of pushing an agenda for a “Muslim-free India” and warned that such content fuels communal hatred. Assam Congress chief and deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, also condemned the video. He said it misrepresents Assam’s history and values, citing the state’s cultural icons including Srimanta Sankardeva, Azan Pir, Lachit Borphukan, and Bhupen Hazarika. Gogoi announced that the Congress would lodge a formal police complaint in Guwahati.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) joined the criticism. Its general secretary and MLA, Aminul Islam, said the BJP was using the video to spread fear and portray Muslims as a threat. He described the post as a form of hate speech and urged the Election Commission to intervene.
Responding to the controversy, Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami defended the video. He claimed it reflected demographic changes in the state that he argued were impacting indigenous communities.
The issue arises at a sensitive political moment, as Assam prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections. Opposition parties are positioning the video as an example of divisive politics that, they argue, undermines social harmony in the state.
