Hyderabad: Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 32-year-old student from Telangana, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California, after allegedly stabbing his roommate during a violent altercation. The incident took place on September 3, but his family was informed only two weeks later, leaving them in shock and grief.
Police said they received a 911 call reporting a stabbing inside a residence. When officers arrived, they found Nizamuddin armed with a knife. According to Santa Clara police chief Cory Morgan, officers opened fire after he allegedly attempted to attack again, firing four bullets that proved fatal. The stabbed roommate was taken to hospital with injuries. Two knives were recovered from the scene.
Nizamuddin had moved to the United States in 2016 for higher studies at the Florida Institute of Technology and later found work as a software engineer. He had been living in shared accommodation in Santa Clara at the time of the incident. His father, Husnuddin, a retired teacher from Mahbubnagar, said he last tried calling his son on September 3 but received no response. News of his death reached the family on September 18 through a friend based in Santa Clara.
Community leader Amjed Ullah Khan of Majlis Bachao Tehreek has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar requesting immediate assistance to repatriate Nizamuddin’s body. The family is awaiting support from Indian authorities to bring him back for burial.
