New Delhi: A memorial service held in the capital brought together diplomats, journalists, civil servants, faith leaders, and civil society members to honour Professor Jagdeep Chhokar, co-founder of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The gathering paid rich tributes to his pioneering work in electoral reforms and his personal legacy of courage, humility, and service.
Trilochan Sastry, founder trustee of ADR, described Chhokar as an extraordinary reformer who lived with clarity and purpose. Known for his wit, discipline, and tireless energy, Chhokar was deeply invested in strengthening democratic institutions. For over 25 years, he guided ADR in making electoral and legal processes understandable to citizens. He engaged widely with journalists, often serving as a patient explainer of complex issues, and declined high-profile positions such as the directorship of IIM Ahmedabad in favour of public service.
Sastry recalled that even under pressure, including being targeted by Pegasus surveillance, Chhokar never wavered in his commitment to democratic accountability. He urged citizens, particularly youth, to take responsibility for protecting and strengthening democracy.
Long-time friend Sehgal remembered him as a man of wide interests, from literature and music to technology, recalling their decades-long friendship and thousands of email exchanges. Family members spoke of his warmth, kindness, and devotion, with nieces calling him “Teddy Bear” and relatives remembering him as “Devta” for his selfless care.
As guests met his wife, Kiran, and shared personal memories, the service closed with a sense of gratitude and inspiration. Chhokar’s life, marked by integrity and resilience, was celebrated as a guide for those striving to uphold democratic values in India.
