“I Love Muhammad” Slogan Sparks Protests Across India

Kanpur – A slogan of devotion has grown into a nationwide controversy. The phrase “I Love Muhammad,” first displayed on a banner during a Barawafat procession in Kanpur on September 4, has sparked protests and rallies across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

In Kanpur’s Rawatpur area, local Hindu groups objected to the banner, calling it a new tradition. Police intervened, restoring the traditional setup. Officials clarified no case was filed over the slogan itself, but an FIR was lodged against 24 people for shifting the location of a tent and banner. The incident quickly escalated into a wider debate.

The matter gained momentum after AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi declared that expressing love for Prophet Muhammad was not a crime, tagging Kanpur police in a public statement. His remarks amplified the controversy, drawing attention nationwide.

In Unnao, youth organised processions with “I Love Muhammad” banners. Clashes with police led to eight FIRs and several arrests. In Maharajganj, police blocked a planned procession and booked 64 people. Kaushambi witnessed viral videos of inflammatory slogans, prompting detentions. In Lucknow, women staged a peaceful sit-in outside the Vidhan Bhavan, with activists questioning the legitimacy of the FIRs.

The issue has since reached Nagpur, where community leaders led protests, and Uttarakhand, where Kashipur saw clashes with police. Political parties have taken opposing stands, while religious leaders urged calm and respect for constitutional rights.

What began as a local dispute has turned into a national debate on religious expression, law enforcement, and communal harmony. Authorities continue to monitor events closely to prevent escalation.
