Jamia Millia Islamia Students Protest Detentions, Demand Resignation of Security Advisor

New Delhi: Students at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) are organising a protest on September 22 following the detention of several participants during a march marking the 17th anniversary of the Batla House encounter. The protest is led by student groups including the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students Federation of India (SFI).

According to student leaders, security personnel and Delhi Police intervened during the march near gate number 7, detaining several students, including leaders. Video footage shows protesters, including female students, being physically handled, dragged, and handed over to police, reportedly under the supervision of the university’s Security Advisor, Syed Abdul Rashid.

The students have demanded the resignation of the Security Advisor, a public apology from the proctorial team, and an independent enquiry into the actions of the staff involved. The protest is set to begin at 5 pm from the Central Canteen.

Delhi Police stated the detentions followed repeated warnings to students who attempted to march beyond the campus despite instructions not to do so. Additional police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.

The demonstration also renews calls for a judicial probe into the 2008 Batla House encounter, during which two men were killed. Student groups have highlighted concerns over freedom of expression, the right to protest, and campus governance, demanding the immediate release of detained students.

The protest reflects ongoing tensions between students and university authorities, focusing attention on campus safety protocols and the role of security staff in managing student activism.
