Hindutva Under Scrutiny in Australia Over Islamophobic Posts

Canberra: The Australian Human Rights Commission has launched an investigation into the Hindu Council of Australia over alleged Islamophobic content on social media. The complaint, filed by the Alliance Against Islamophobia, accuses the Council and its leaders, including President Sai Paravastu and Head of Media Neelima Paravastu, of spreading harmful stereotypes about Muslims between May 2024 and July 2025.

The posts, shared on X and Instagram, reportedly included content from far-right figures such as Charlie Kirk and Tommy Robinson. Certain messages targeted Indian, Bangladeshi, and Rohingya Muslims, portraying them as violent, dangerous, and a threat to society. One post shared by Neelima Paravastu quoted Tommy Robinson warning the US about “problems Islam brings.”

The complaint also highlighted public statements by the Council’s leadership. Sai Paravastu reportedly called for the removal of Muslim prayer rooms in Australian schools. Posts in Hindi allegedly amplified divisive narratives against the Muslim community, fueling fear and discrimination.

The Alliance Against Islamophobia is demanding a formal apology, removal of offending content, and assurances that the Council will stop targeting Muslims. They are also seeking compensation for the distress caused.

Observers note that this case illustrates the spread of Hindutva ideology beyond India, influencing communities with South Asian backgrounds in other countries. Advocates warn that such actions threaten social cohesion and multicultural values in nations like Australia, where Muslims form a significant part of the diaspora.

The Australian Human Rights Commission’s investigation will determine whether the Hindu Council violated anti-discrimination laws and contributed to a hostile environment for Muslims. The case underscores the need for accountability and vigilance against global Islamophobia.
