Kanpur Police Clarify Action in ‘I Love Muhammad’ Banner Controversy

Kanpur: The controversy over the ‘I Love Muhammad’ banner during Milad-un-Nabi processions has drawn widespread debate after police action against Muslim youths. Over 20 young men were booked, sparking protests across the country and accusations of bias.

On September 4, youths in Syed Nagar displayed a banner reading ‘I Love Muhammad’ and set up tents and posters. Right-wing groups objected, calling it a “new tradition.” The dispute escalated into vandalism and police intervention. The banner was taken down, and an FIR was filed. However, no action was taken against members of Hindutva groups, fueling outrage among Muslim communities.

The issue gained national attention after Muslim clerics met with Kanpur Nagar Police Commissioner Akhil Kumar on Tuesday. They voiced concerns over what they called unfair targeting. Commissioner Kumar clarified that the FIR was not about the banner’s message but about its placement on a non-traditional route normally used for Ram Navami processions. He added that the FIR also cited the tearing of religious posters belonging to another community.

Commissioner Kumar assured that those wrongly named would be cleared from the case. He stated that strict legal action would follow against those found guilty of vandalism. His statement was intended to reduce tensions and address concerns over communal sensitivity.

The controversy has spread beyond Kanpur. Shops and streets across India displayed ‘I Love Muhammad’ posters, while many updated social media profiles in solidarity with the detained youths. The case has raised questions about religious freedom, police impartiality, and the management of inter-community disputes.
