New York: Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar delivered a forceful address at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, condemning global inaction in the face of atrocities and warning that international law risks collapse under hypocrisy and self-interest. She called on world leaders to act against the genocide in Gaza, stating, “We did not stop the Holocaust, we did not stop the genocide in Rwanda, we did not stop the genocide in Srebrenica. We must stop the genocide in Gaza. There are no excuses anymore.”
Pirc Musar criticized the UN Security Council, accusing its five permanent members of prioritizing narrow national agendas over global peace. She highlighted the undermining of international law, citing threats to the independence of judges and selective funding of UN agencies. She stressed that global leaders who fail their citizens and future generations are complicit in crimes against civilization and the planet.
She proposed reforms including transformation of the Security Council, systematic gender equality in multilateral leadership, and the creation of a Global Forum for the Future to defend multilateralism and implement the Pact for the Future. Pirc Musar emphasized the urgent need for inclusive and fearless leadership, calling for accountability for those behind wars, genocidal policies, and crimes against humanity.
The president urged governments, artists, and global influencers to join efforts to defend humanity, reject arrogance and inequality, and push for fundamental systemic change. She stressed that achieving gender equity and empowering women in policymaking is essential for the UN’s success.
Her message combined sharp condemnation with actionable proposals, warning that if leaders offer only terror, conflict, fear, and inequality, the world risks further injustice. Pirc Musar called for global unity to act decisively and prevent atrocities, invoking history as a reminder of past failures and the urgent need to protect Gaza.
