Aligarh: In a remarkable gesture of commitment to their alma mater, the 1988 batch of students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), along with the wards of retired Professor Suhail Sabir of the Department of Chemistry, have come together from the USA and Canada to establish a lifetime scholarship for AMU students. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Aligarh Alumni Association, Washington DC (AAADC), stands as a shining example of alumni dedication and philanthropy.
The scholarship has been instituted to honour Prof. Suhail Sabir’s distinguished contributions as a teacher, researcher, and mentor, ensuring that financial constraints never obstruct the academic journeys of deserving AMU students. By providing sustained financial support, this initiative upholds the university’s mission of promoting excellence and inclusivity in higher education.
Prof. Sabir’s association with AMU has been marked by his commitment to both academics and institutional service. In addition to his role as a mentor and scholar, he served as Provost and Chairman of the AMU Alumni Affairs Committee until 2018. Following his retirement in 2024, he further strengthened his legacy by donating ₹50 lakh to AMU to establish scholarships for underprivileged students, reaffirming his lifelong dedication to education and student welfare.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of AAADC, Mr. Afzal Usmani, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, said: “It is a matter of pride that Prof. Sabir’s students and wards have chosen AAADC as a partner for this noble cause. Their generosity reflects the enduring bond that alumni share with AMU and will inspire many others to contribute toward shaping brighter futures.”
On behalf of the AMU Alumni Affairs Committee, Prof. Sartaj Tabassum said: “This noble initiative is a testament to the spirit of Sir Syed’s vision. By establishing this lifetime scholarship, our alumni have set an inspiring example that will encourage others to extend their support for AMU students.”
