Muslim Shops Forcibly Removed Near Temple in Ghaziabad, Raising Concerns of Bias

Ghaziabad: Tensions flared in Modinagar after members of Hindu right-wing organisations forcibly removed shops run by Muslims outside the Sikri Mata Temple. The incident took place on Saturday without any immediate intervention from local authorities, sparking fears of discrimination and communal targeting.

Eyewitnesses reported that stalls selling food, sweets, drinks, and small devotional items were dismantled by activists from groups including the Bajrang Dal. One shopkeeper, speaking anonymously, said, “We had set up our stall with permission. There was nothing wrong with our business, yet it was destroyed.”

Activists defended their actions, claiming that Muslim shopkeepers, who they accused of eating meat, should not operate near the temple during Navratri. Some alleged that vendors mislabelled items to mislead devotees. “They offered ‘vrat juice’ with similar names to confuse people,” a local volunteer said.

Muslim residents expressed dismay, pointing out that their shops had been part of the local market for years. “We have always respected religious boundaries and festivals. Yet, we are being targeted for our identity,” said a community member.

Local officials acknowledged receiving complaints but admitted no timely action was taken. “This should have been addressed legally, not through vigilantism,” a temple official stated.

Legal experts warned that the forced eviction violates constitutional rights to equality, religion, and occupation. Advocate Sameer Qureshi noted, “Communities cannot be singled out due to stereotypes or dietary habits.”

The incident has prompted protests from Muslim welfare groups demanding protection and fair treatment. Residents urged dialogue to restore communal harmony, warning that unchecked vigilantism threatens the secular fabric of the country.
