Shravasti: Tension gripped Rajgarh Gulria village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district after a dispute between two communities escalated into violence late Monday night. The confrontation began when Muslim children were reportedly playing on land belonging to a temple, leading to heated arguments and eventually a physical clash.
Eyewitnesses reported that sticks, stones, and bricks were used during the violence. Over half a dozen people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Among the incidents, members of the Muslim community were accused of throwing chili powder, while the Hindu side was seen raising saffron flags, adding a communal edge to the conflict.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control, prompting the intervention of senior police officials. Initial attempts by the local police team to restore order were unsuccessful, following which a larger force, including the Circle Officer, reached the spot. Police managed to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control.
Authorities have since deployed a heavy police presence in the village and carried out a flag march to prevent further escalation. The incident has raised fears of communal flare-ups, especially as Rajgarh Gulria has a Muslim-majority population.
Local officials stated that the injured are receiving treatment and that investigations are ongoing to determine responsibility for the violence. Rights groups have expressed concern that the incident reflects rising communal tensions in rural Uttar Pradesh, urging preventive measures and dialogue between communities.
