Baramulla Education Officer Warns Staff on Social Media Conduct

Baramulla: The Chief Education Officer of Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir, has issued a formal warning to government school staff regarding their activity on social media. Employees were advised to avoid posting or sharing content that could be interpreted as anti-government or politically sensitive.

The directive instructed staff to refrain from commenting on government policies, particularly those related to education and administration. It emphasized that such posts could violate service conduct rules and attract disciplinary action.

Officials indicated that the warning followed instances where teachers and staff posted critical remarks about administrative decisions. Some posts were deemed politically charged or provocative, prompting the CEO to intervene.

The circular cited provisions under the Jammu & Kashmir Civil Services Conduct Rules, which restrict government employees from engaging in political discourse or criticism of the administration. Employees are expected to maintain neutrality and discipline in public forums.

The move has drawn reactions from educators and civil society groups. Critics argue that the directive limits freedom of expression, while officials maintain it is necessary to preserve institutional integrity and prevent disruptions.

The Baramulla administration emphasized that maintaining professional conduct online is part of the broader responsibility of government employees. Staff were urged to be cautious and ensure that social media activity does not compromise public trust or reflect negatively on government institutions.

The warning underscores the ongoing balance between free speech and administrative discipline in public service, particularly in regions with heightened political sensitivity.
