Halal Certification Scandal Raises Concerns Over Consumer Deception

New Delhi: An investigation by Bhaskar has uncovered a growing malpractice in India’s halal certification system, where some organizations are allegedly issuing certificates for ₹5,000 without proper verification. The report warns that such practices are deceiving Muslim consumers who rely on these certifications to ensure products comply with Islamic dietary laws.

According to the investigation, several small firms and local agencies are exploiting the lack of centralized regulation. They provide halal labels for a fixed fee without inspecting production processes, ingredients, or slaughter methods. This has created deep mistrust among consumers and businesses that follow authentic halal standards.

Community leaders have voiced strong concern over the commercialization of a religious obligation. They stated that this practice is misleading Muslims and compromising faith-based dietary observance. Many have urged government authorities to introduce strict oversight and licensing rules for halal certifying bodies to restore credibility.

Experts also warned that fake certifications affect consumer rights and fair trade. Without a transparent system, both producers and consumers risk falling victim to fraudulent labeling. The report calls for the establishment of a uniform national halal certification framework that ensures authenticity and prevents exploitation.

The investigation highlights how the absence of clear monitoring allows misuse of a term deeply rooted in religious ethics. For Muslim consumers, the issue is not only about food safety but also about upholding faith and trust.
