Bengaluru Police Act Swiftly Against Lawyer Who Threw Shoe at Chief Justice Gavai

Bengaluru: Police in Bengaluru have registered a case against advocate Rakesh Kishore, who allegedly threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai during a court session at the Supreme Court in New Delhi. The move followed a complaint by senior lawyer Bhaktavachala, 73, who urged authorities to act “to protect the judiciary.”

The FIR, filed under Sections 132 and 133 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, accuses Kishore of using criminal force to deter a public servant and of attempting to dishonour a person without provocation. The case will be transferred to Delhi Police for further action.

The incident, which occurred on October 6 in Court Hall No. 1, has sparked widespread condemnation across legal and civil society circles. Bhaktavachala’s complaint described the act as a direct assault on judicial dignity, emphasizing the need to uphold respect for constitutional institutions.

Former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao, now associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, drew public anger after initially posting a message on X praising Kishore’s “courage.” The message, directed at a fake account impersonating the lawyer, was later deleted. Rao clarified that his words were misunderstood and apologized for any offence caused, stating that his response came from “shock” rather than endorsement.

The episode has reignited debate on the responsibility of citizens, especially professionals, in maintaining decorum toward judicial officers and respecting the rule of law.
