Bhadohi: The carpet-making city of Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh has earned global recognition with the creation of the world’s largest hand-tufted carpet, certified by Guinness World Records. The 12,400-square-meter masterpiece marks a milestone for India’s craft-based carpet industry and showcases the enduring skill of its artisans.
The project, executed during the COVID-19 pandemic, tested every limit of craftsmanship, logistics, and resilience. Over 1,000 skilled artisans worked tirelessly for six months to complete the mammoth carpet. Despite labour shortages and strict health precautions, the workforce maintained steady progress under difficult conditions.
Securing this international order was an achievement in itself. The Bhadohi-based company outperformed competitors from China and the United States to win the bid. The final carpet was exported to Kazakhstan in nine containers, each carrying several massive rolls. Global container shortages during the pandemic further complicated shipping, yet the team ensured safe transport of all 125 rolls without a single flaw.
The company had to create new infrastructure to manage the project’s scale, including facilities for printing, latex application, finishing, and packaging. Every process was manually managed, reaffirming the craftsmanship-driven nature of Bhadohi’s carpet industry.
The achievement has ignited pride among local artisans and brought renewed international focus to India’s traditional weaving expertise. Industry leaders view the recognition as motivation to explore larger, more ambitious projects that continue to honour India’s heritage of handwoven excellence.
