Chennai: The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) has condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement linking the growth of India’s Muslim population to “infiltration” from neighbouring countries. The party described his comment as reckless and politically driven.
In a sharp response, MMK president and Tamil Nadu MLA Prof. M. H. Jawahirullah said the remark distorts demographic facts and risks deepening communal mistrust. He warned that such statements from the country’s top law enforcement authority weaken national unity and the constitutional value of equality.
Citing official data from the Census, the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), and studies by the Pew Research Center, Jawahirullah said India’s Muslim fertility rate has steadily declined for over two decades. He added that this decline aligns with national trends shaped by education, urbanisation, and women’s empowerment.
“To attribute demographic change to infiltration is baseless and offensive to Indian Muslims,” he stated. Jawahirullah argued that the timing of Shah’s comments, ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, exposes a political intent to polarise voters.
He said the Home Minister’s responsibility is to strengthen internal harmony, not to spread suspicion among communities. “India’s resilience comes from its diversity, not from spreading fear,” he added, calling on national leaders to respect facts and uphold the principles of the Constitution.
